How a fair doubles round robin works
Rules come from the ITF Rules of Tennis 2026; formats that clubs simply agree on are marked as custom, with the source.
A new partner every round, or fixed pairs
In a rotating round robin you sign up alone and play each round with a different partner. With fixed pairs, every pair meets the other pairs. The USTA advises choosing one or the other for the whole event, not both.
USTA Adult Tournaments Level 7, Best Practices for One-Day Tournaments (2021), III.A.3.
One point for every game won
Each player scores the games their team won in each round. The schedule rests players in turn and never twice in a row while others play. If someone still plays fewer matches, the table ranks by average games per match; the USTA adds a player's own average for each missed round, which gives the same order.
USTA Level 7 manual, III.B.1 and III.C.
No-Ad: one deciding point at deuce
At deuce a single deciding point is played and the receivers choose the side they receive from. In mixed doubles the player of the same gender as the server receives it. The USTA recommends No-Ad for every social round robin.

Short sets to four games
The first team to four games with a two-game margin wins the set; at four games all a tie-break decides. The organiser may also decide to play the tie-break at three games all.
ITF Rules of Tennis 2026, Appendix VI, 1 (Short Sets).
Timed rounds: stop on the whistle
Everyone starts and stops together. If the whistle blows during a point, the point is finished; the team leading the game in progress gets that game; a tied game is settled by one more point. Allow about five minutes between rounds to report scores.
USTA Level 7 manual, IV.1 (timed round robin rules).
Schleifchenturnier: a ribbon for every round won
German clubs redraw the partners every round, often as mixed doubles with one woman and one man per team, and play rounds of about 20 to 30 minutes. Each round win earns a ribbon; the most ribbons wins, and a tie goes to the game ratio or a final. To rank this way here, read the Won column.

Questions about tennis round robins
How many rounds should a tennis round robin have?
For two hours: about 5 rounds of 20 minutes, or 7 rounds of 12 minutes (USTA: 12–15 minutes per round for 8 or more players), plus about 5 minutes between rounds. With 8 players on 2 courts, 7 rounds give everyone a new partner every round. The tool suggests a count where everyone plays the same number of matches and shows the estimated time.
What happens with an odd number of players?
Players sit out in turn: those who have rested least go first, and nobody sits out twice in a row as long as fewer than half the players rest. If the rounds cannot be split evenly, the table ranks by average games per match, so a rest never costs points.
Games or time: which scoring should we use?
With a fixed end time, play timed rounds of 12 to 20 minutes (the USTA suggests 12 to 15 with 8 or more players), start the round timer and enter the games when it ends. Without a clock, play a set number of games or a short set to four. Use No-Ad in both cases so the rounds finish together.
Can I use it for mixed doubles or a Schleifchenturnier?
Yes for the rotating draw, the timed rounds and the round-win count in the Won column. The tool does not yet keep one woman and one man in every team automatically; for strict mixed pairs, use fixed pairs and line them up yourself.
Is anything stored or do players need an account?
No. The schedule and scores live only in the link. Whoever opens the link sees the names and scores; nothing is stored on our servers and nobody needs to sign up.
What if someone has to leave early?
Use Substitutes and withdrawals: a substitute takes over the place and the points so far, and a player who withdraws leaves from the first round without scores. The remaining rounds are rebuilt for the players still there.
