Ladder and box league rules clubs use

No federation writes rules for club ladders or box leagues. Clubs write their own, and most use the same few ideas. Here they are, with the clubs we took them from. Only the match format comes from official rules.

Challenge ladder

  1. Challenge range

    Club custom

Challenge players two or three places above you. Pyramid ladders let you challenge anyone in the row above.

  2. Time to play

    Club custom

The match is played within 7 to 14 days. Agree a date within a few days of the challenge.

  3. Winning and losing

    Club custom

A winning challenger takes the place and everyone in between moves down one. If the challenger loses, the order stays. Some clubs drop the loser one place instead.

  4. Refusal and no-show

    Club custom

Refusing a challenge without a reason, or not turning up after 15 minutes, counts as a loss.

  5. Court and balls

    Club custom

The challenger books the court and brings a new can of balls.

  6. Rematch wait

    Club custom

The same two players meet again only after a waiting period, often one to eight weeks, so one pair cannot block the ladder.

  7. Newcomers and inactive players

    Club custom

New players start at the bottom or challenge their way in. Players who do not play for about four weeks drop a few places.

Box league

  1. Boxes of 4–6

    Club custom

Players of similar level form boxes of four to six. Box 1 holds the strongest players.

  2. One round

    Club custom

Everyone plays everyone in the box once within the period, usually six to eight weeks.

  3. Points

    Club custom

Common schemes: 3 for a win and 1 for a loss, or 1 point per game won plus 2 for the win. Some clubs give 5 or 4 for a win and 2 or 1 for a loss, depending on sets. The per-game scheme works best when every match has the same number of games, for example 15 straight games or one pro set.

  4. Up and down

    Club custom

The top two move up a box and the bottom two move down. Players with fewer than two matches cannot move up.

  5. Walkovers

    Club custom

Refusing two dates, arriving more than 15 minutes late or cancelling less than 24 hours before gives the match to the opponent.

  6. Ties

    Club custom

Each club sets its own order. Most common: head-to-head first (or the matches among all tied players), then sets and games won. This generator puts wins first with 3/1 points, so nobody climbs just by losing more matches; with per-game points, more matches played counts after the head-to-head.

What the official rules say

Official rule
  • Match tie-break instead of a third set

A tie-break to 10 points, won by two, may replace the deciding set (ITF Rules of Tennis 2026, Appendix VI, match tie-break 10 points). Most league matches use it.

  • Shorter matches

For evening leagues: no-ad games with a deciding point (receivers choose the side) and short sets to 4 games with a tie-break at 4-4 (ITF Appendix VI).

  • Sets and tie-break

A set is won with six games and a two-game margin; at 6-6 a tie-break to 7 is played (ITF Rules of Tennis 2026, Rules 5b and 6).

  • Warm-up

Warm-up lasts at most five minutes unless the organiser decides otherwise (ITF Rules of Tennis 2026, Rule 29e).

Questions about tennis ladders and box leagues

What is a tennis challenge ladder?

A ranked list of players. You challenge someone a few places above you; if you win, you take their place and the players in between move down one. It runs all season at each pair's own pace.

What is a box league in tennis?

Players are split into small groups (boxes) of similar level, usually four to six. Everyone plays everyone in the box once within a period such as six or eight weeks. Then the top players move up a box and the bottom players move down.

Ladder or box league: which is better?

A ladder suits clubs where players book their own matches whenever they like. A box league gives everyone a fixed number of matches in a period and is easier to organise for a big group. Many clubs run both.

Are these official rules?

No. Ladder and box league rules are club customs; each club writes its own. Only the match format follows official rules, for example the match tie-break in the ITF Rules of Tennis, Appendix VI.

How should a box league be scored?

The simplest is 3 points for a win and 1 for playing and losing. If you want close matches to count, give 1 point per game won plus 2 for the win. Agree the scheme before the first match.

Can I save the ladder and continue later?
